Food-fest

In March we got a little food-crazy!

I've been itching to try
out new recipes,
new foods,
and even new
cooking tools!

...

The attempt at re-creating the
Passion Fruit Lime Bavarian
from San Francisco's Tartine Bakery...
didn't go so well.

Delicious, yes.

Perfect copy-cat recipe!

No way!

Thank goodnss the bay is not
far away!

...

Luckily classics
like chocolate chip cookies
and our all-the-way burgers with
Blue Cheese, Arugula, and
homemade BBQ sauce
never fail!

We had fun trying to eat our super-huge creations!

...

And thanks to my new birthday present,
a cast iron grill & griddle pan from the
Antique Trove...

{note}

Have you ever been?
It's a must visit!
Go!
Without kids!!!

...we are going nuts with everything from
super-crisp grilled cheese sandwiches
to Korean BBQ!

I love my grill!

...

And last but not least,
dragon fruit!

You see it featured all the time on
food competitions,
and when I saw this
"secret basket" ingredient
at Winco I pounced!

The result?

Beautiful fruit-
think tropical dalmation...?
But the flavor is so, so bland!

We kicked it up with some sugar and vinegar,
but still,
this house will take plain ol' grapes anyday!

...

Happy Eating
to you too!

Happy Anniversary: San Francisco & Muir Woods

For our 11th anniversary
we dropped the kiddos off with their
aunt and uncle
and headed to our favorite place in the whole world:

San Francisco!

The first day we hit the Mission District
for some serious foodie advenuturing,
the second day we reserved for
hiking in Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods
and exploring Mill Valley.

It was...

perfect!

Cannoli-time!

{Too bad it wasn't the best we've had!}

Our "Best Thing I Ever Ate" stop...

The Chef's Tasting Menu came highly recommended
by Chris Cosentino
and can I say,
we are so glad we made it here!

It is the tiniest restaurant I've EVER been in
{picture room for 6-max}
but the variety and complexity of the dishes
that poured out of this tiny 2-man kitchen
was amazing!

We counted our good fortune in being the first
one's in the door,
getting front row seats,
and settling in for culinary masterpieces
plate after plate!

As we finished our last bite-
we heard the chef turn away the next couple to walk in the door.

After one service,
he was done and off to shop
for dinner service!

Here's the restaurant from the outside.

Totally inconspicuous but do not be deceived!

Note:
If you plan on going,
arrive before they open to be first in line.
They WILL turn you away within minutes
because they're already full.

Bring cash!

Be mindful that halfway through our meal
we realized some of the music was
just as punchy as the food!

Also,
leave the kiddos at home.
This meal is best savored with your sweetie!

The rest of the day we spent on our feet
exploring this fabulous city.

We love to window-shop,
and go inside and peruse all the insanely priced
shoes, furniture, etc.-

Question:

Who actually buys this stuff at these prices?

Crazy!

Photo opp for my boys at home!

With all of our strolling we worked up an appetite.

We foolishly thought we could get in to Nopa on a whim-
turns out they suggest you make reservations
at least one month in advance!

Then we hit Foreign Cinema,
again full,
but definitely,
like Nopa,
high on the "To Visit" list!

Finally we settled on two local favorites,
take out pizza from Delfina's Pizzeria
and dessert from Tartine Bakery.

I am now a fan of Proscuitto and Arugula Pie
and Passion Fruit Lime Bavarian Cake!

Can I say how excited I am
to buy the Tartine Cookbook
 with my ever growing Swagbucks?

Woo hoo!

Can't wait!

With goodies in hand we cross the bridge!

And there she is...

Home sweet home!

the closest thing to visiting across the pond!

This would lead you to believe that we jumped in our jammies
as soon as we arrived-
afterall,
it was nearly 11 PM!

But no,
this picture was taken after our pitch black walk to the ocean.

It was beautiful...
cold...
but so worth it!

Party pooper!

And yes,
I amused myself by waking him!

Enjoying the gardens...

The Pub

Breakfast on the patio
with a roaring fire...

Bangers, Broiled Tomato, Bacon, Eggs, Toast...
Samuel was in hog heaven-
literally!

For me,
English Porridge...delicious!

Ha!

I hit a Bulls-eye!

Then I nailed him in chess!

What a GREAT day!

I never beat him in chess!

Another shot for the memory books!

Love that I always see a crazy goofy car
when we hit the road together...

Our "hike"...

{smile}

Samuel took a ton of shots of this huge crow.

I spared you by posting only two...

Heading down to "Pirates Cove"...

Love these!

It inspired us to make our own!

And it stood!

After our hike,
we lounged a bit on the beach and munched on treats.

This doggie took a notion to befriend me.

Obviously, he doesn't know me well
or he would have known:

We can NEVER be friends!

{Sorry, kids, not dogs,
have wormed their way into my heart!}

...

Later we checked out Muir Woods
-we'll definitely return with the kiddos-
and ate at the Muir Woods Trading Co.,
another "Best Thing I Ever Ate" recommendation
from Tyler Florence.

We love you Tyler,
but seriously,
save your money and make a banging grilled cheese
at home!

After a tour of downtown Mill Valley
-a charming city-
we headed home!

...

I love you, Samuel!

You are the love of my life!

Happy Anniversary!

One last Raw Oyster, Dim-sum, Green-chili Chevre, Maple-glazed Donut, hurrah!

When we found out the girls summer
would extend by two weeks,
we knew we wanted one last trip to the bay area!

First stop,
The Ferry Market Building for a first:

Raw Oysters!

I've got to tell you,
I'm not a fan!

I won't write them off altogether though...
next we'll have to try them grilled...

It wasn't a total waste though,
it's not often you can gross out
every single one of your kids at the same time!

Trekking to Chinatown we found some great pocket parks!

Another welcome sight?

All the yummy restauants!

This time we tried dim-sum...
a first for us all!

Sesame balls...

...a favorite of you-know-who!

After lunch we wandered throughout the city in search of

It's a teeny tiny factory that you're allowed to step in (literally)
and see how the cookies are made!
I can't undertand a word they say,
but they love kids and are generous with samples!

Check out the architecture of this park!

Love it!

What Samuel and I loved about this place was the
great sense of community.

There were tons of folks out
visiting, laughing, and playing games.

It was a sight to see a park really...jumping!

I had read great things about this Buena Vista Park,
which was described as a kind of urban hiking oasis
near the Haight & Ashbury district.

The park is basically a huge tree-covered hill/mountain
with paths that literally twist and turn all over the face!

There were dogs galore (plus their owners),
so we got plenty of petting in!

But the best surprise of all,
and what put a serious slow down on our exploring,
was the blackberry bushes!

They were everywhere!

Plus huge yellow spiders so we
had to be careful!

But still...

B L A C K B E R R I E S !

I love them.

Can you tell?

Ah ha!

What do we spy!

Another hill!

This one made of...dirt?

Book mark that for next time.

Whereas we're in a jungle,
that is a naked hill, my friend.

The views have got to be incredible over there!

Of course,
Buena Vista Park wouldn't be much of a park,
at least in our kids opinions,
if it didn't have a play area.

We searched and searched for it,
when finally, just as we were leaving
-and I mean, we were driving away!-
we found it!

The downside,
this is a park you do not want to go to alone.

Or after dark.

Or without a man.

Or without mean karate skills.

There are, let's just say, a number of questionable characters about...
...

Let me reiterate:

The park is amazing!

Go visit it-but keep your peeps peeled!
...

No one ever actually entered the park area,
but Samuel and I kept our spidey-senses on...

Well,
I did anyway...

Maybe he's doing reconaissance from an arial perspective...?

A girl after my own heart!

I LOVE to eat and read!

...

And what is she eating, you may ask...

Yummy french bread, salami, cheeses, sweet nectarines...

In other words,
a signature San Francisco picnic!

And that picnic would not be complete
without a treat just for mom and dad:

F R E S H  G R E E N  C H I L I  G O A T  C H E V R E

One of many wickedly delicious concoctions from
The Cowgirl Creamery!

And on a green olive loaf no less!

B R E A D + C H E E S E

H E A V E N !

{And yes, there is such a place...}

Still at it...

Iris,
learning the hard way that the baby swings are for...

B A B I E S !

By the way,
I spared you the plumbers crack that peeked out moments later...

We made it out alive!

{Just kidding...}

But since it was freezing outside we did a quick drive-by of
our next stop:

Alamo Square!

All in the name of catching a glimpse of the famous
Painted Ladies!

{You remember, from Full House!}

They are delightful,
but perhaps not so much as...

B O B ' S  D O N U T ' S ! ? !

Yup,
sugar-filled puffs of goodness win hands down!

What can trump donuts, you say?

The temple, of course!

Especially our beloved Oakland Temple...

Truly the place where our family began!

...

In a nutshell,
this was a great trip!

It was everything we want for our kids...
teaching them principles of traveling on a dime,
taking advantage of the unexpected,
being adventurous (but also cautious),
and the importance of spending time with that
funky group of people that happen to be your lot/blessing in life!
