Iris & Grandma Lopez on a Field Trip!

I have the greatest grandma in the world!

While I was on a field trip with Isabella,
Grandma Lopez accompanied Iris on her
field trip to the Sunflower Market.

They had the best time together,
and as much as Grandma looked out for Iris,
Iris looked out for Grandma!

Since this field trip,
Grandma has had a mild stroke,
making it impossible for her to do something like this again.

How grateful I am for time well spent
together as families,
and for captured memories too!

Thank you, Grandma!

You do so much for us!

Owen-Boy...

OWEN

My runner, jumper,
dinosaur monster...

who loves legos, toast, and
all things under my cake dome!

He is never more my Owen
than when running around in jammies,
with a new affinity for socks,
and that wonderful bed hair!

Owen,
I love you!

Thank you for taking some photos for your mum
so I can capture what intrigues you,
makes you happy,
and makes you
YOU!

You are a good boy
and I love that you are my son!

Have a happy day!

Our Christmas & New Years Holiday...In a Nutshell

What a year!

As I reflect on the year 2011,
I know with absolute certainly that Samuel and I
are officially old!

I putter,
sip insane amounts of hot cocoa,
and love to snug-in.

Samuel officially shaves his head
(it looks SO much better),
wears slippers,
and makes insane amounts of hot cocoa!

For guess who?

Time is passing so quickly,
but then again,
maybe we're just having too much fun?

This year, the kids started a new school
and it's been a great experience for our entire family!

We also visited several places for the very first time including
Mono Lake and Tuolomne Meadows in Yosemite National Park.
In the fall we stayed in Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Park
and enjoyed the snow and hiking Morro Rock!

Isabella graduated to the older Activity Days group,
which means Young Women's is not far off...

Ava turned eight,
and was baptized with her cousin Jacob.
It was a wonderful day,
perfect for a truly wonderful girl!

We chopped Iris' hair
and she and I have never been happier!
No more fighting, crying, or whining over
the daily task of trying to comb it!

{update}

Now she wants to grow it out!
Nooooo...

Owen stayed home with
me and Gabriel this year,
and I have loved every minute of
having my boys at home with me!
This fall he'll enter kindergarden and
I'll have to learn to make do
without one of my favorite little men!

Gabriel officially passed Owen in weight,
and yes, people still ask if they're twins!

(For the record, they are not!}

As for Samuel and I,
we have been blessed beyond measure.

Our family continues to grow stronger each day
and we have a loving Heavenly Father
to thank for that.

We're also bearing down on Samuel's final semester of school,
and are all looking forward
to his graduation from the MBA program in May!

It has been a long journey, but he has worked so hard,
and we are so very proud of him!

Here's a peek into our holiday...

Love,
The Samuel Elmers

 Holiday Kick-off Dinner:

Chinese Take-out!

High Tea!

The kids went bananas and dressed to the nines!
The herbal tea was a flop with everyone except Iris,
but the various tarts and puddings were a unanimous hit!

Christmas Cinnamon Rolls!

The downside?

No powdered sugar for the glaze!
I substituted regular sugar with poor results,
but sugar is sugar and we ate them anyway!

Our neighbors were kind enough
to give us a wooden cut-out of a snowman.

We debated as a family how to decorate it,
and finally I insisted:

OFF WITH HIS HEAD!

And there you have it!

Chrismas Eve Dinner is something we LOVE!

A West coast feast of dungeness crab,
shrimp, clam chowder, and sourdough!

I love California!

Tradition rules:

Everyone opens one gift from mom and dad on Christmas Eve:

New PJ's!

This year,
before the kiddies went to bed,
we set out Santa's cookie plate.

We remembered, too late,
that we didn't have any more homemade cookies to set!

Too bad!
Oreos it is-plus carrots for the reindeer!

Sure enough,
they were gobbled up,
and the big guy left a note too!

Christmas morning was a blur,
with the kiddies getting us up at around 6:30 a.m.

At church, later that morning,
a sweet sister asked,
"What did you all get for Christmas?"

To our kids delight they reported on the various
guns, knives, and ninja stars left under the tree!

She was horrified.

Looking back,
I guess there was a rather violent theme to the gifts... :)

One of my favorite memories though,
was of Owen learning how to use his cap gun.

He was terrifed when he heard the caps popping
and started screaming,
"I don't want a REAL GUN!".

Made us laugh... :)

We visited my mom's for a Christmas feast,
and watched Grandma Lopez  gobble her See's candy
while the kids pounded huge balls of bubble gum!

At Samuel's parents the gift opening frenzy commenced
and we munched on appetizers throughout the night.

Yum!

One of the gifts Santa left for Bella was
new paint for her room.

She loved the peacock blue and I couldn't resist
a little paint stenciling...

Our house was all a twitter getting ready for the
big New Years bash!

We love having the family over and
I'm sure our neighbor's LOVED all
the whooping and hollering at the stroke of midnight!

It's hard to top fireworks when you're ringing in the New Year,
but watching the girls dance to Despicable Me
on the Wii is a pretty close second...

We took a much needed trip to San Francisco
and walked Lombard Street...

...the pier...

...Union Square and Chinatown!

The highlight:

Seeing someone pee on the street.  Awesome.

A true highlight?

The Oakland Temple!

We arrived too late to see the Christmas lights,
but really,
it doesn't need them!

As our holiday came to a close,
Samuel took the kids out into the field to give
Ava's bb gun a whirl.

Everyone still has all their eyeballs
so that ended well...

Last but not least,
on the kids first day back at school,
Iris woke up with the awesomest bed hair!

2012...

Here we come!

Grateful for Roots

Since we were so far south for our
trip to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park,
we took the opportunity to head even further south
to Bakersfield, California
to celebrate Thanksgiving
with my late Grandpa's side of the family.

His brother, my great Uncle Junior,
played host to over 50+ relatives,
and this,
they informed me,
was a light year!

There were three whopping huge turkeys
being carved in the kitchen,
and a vat of mashed potatoes so big that
I could easily have bathed both my boys in it!

But best all,
was the tremendous sense of family.

It has been years since I've visited,
the last time was when I was maybe
thirteen or fourteen years old...

but I remember.

I remember, especially,
my grandpa.

He took me here.

He made sure I knew where I came from.

And then he wanted me
to grow and be happy
with a family of my own.

...

So, so grateful.

For family.

P.S.  Miss you, grandpa.

And...

See you later, alligator.

After awhile, crocodile.

Dear Aunt Agnes, his joyful wife from Brooklyn!

The photo which spurred a number of
car honkings, catcalls, and even a passer-by
who slowed and took their own photo of us from his car!

Grandpa's little sister, Aunt Connie,
whose personality is anything but little!

So happy to be surrounded by family not
seen nearly often enough!

Crazy Thanksgiving: Kings Canyon + Sequoia National Park

Last year,
for Thanksgiving break,
we backpacked in Point Reyes with family
and had the best time!

We were definitely bitten by the
school-break-travel-bug,
so this year
we opted to put our
National Parks Pass
to good use and visit
Kings Canyon + Sequoia National Park!

We've never visited a park
in the off season and
were really looking forward to,
one, the solitude and
two, seeing the park
in a whole new light.

We scored a great deal on a rustic cabin,
and quickly prepared for what would
be our first foray
into staying in the snow!

A rainbow!

What a nice send-off!

And away we go...

This is beautiful country,
and as we settled in for the long haul,
we couldn't help but notice the weather changing...

and the temperature dropping!

Home sweet home!

But why stay in when there's
a winter wonderland right outside our door!

Wow!

Talk about a little heaven on earth!

Samuel's face is so funny here!

He was amazed that there were icicles,
much less icicles this big!

We are so not snow people!

After our snow play,
and in honor of Thanksgiving,
a turkey feast...
on the floor!

Even trips to the bathroom proved magical!

And a nice bonus,
the bathrooms were pristine and super-toasty warm!

Really!

Back in the cabin,
open rafters provided the perfect way
to store gear and dry wet clothes!

Some weren't too keen on the accomodations... :)

Packing up fo a day of exploration!

Today,
Moro Rock!

But first,
the kids burn some pre-hike energy by
scrabbling around...

Now this is hiking!

If only we could pull the boys on all of our treks!

Iris,
the only child without boots!

How did we overlook this?!?

Luckily I brought all their socks from home!

Yes,
the boys still exclaim over every little mound,
"I'm on Half-Dome"!

And up we go...

On most of the rock
the sun had melted all the ice and snow.

But near the top,
was another story all together.

I served as Scout to see if it was
safe for everyone to go up.

And as you can see,
it was a "go"!

We met a fantastic older German couple-
"Gunter", was the gentlemen's name.

When we asked if he had been here before,
he pointed to all the surrounding peaks in a
sweeping gesture and said he had summited all of those!

Amazing!
He took particular interest in the kids,
and was especially concerned that no one fall off the rock.

As you can see from above,
that was a genuine concern!

One of the worst spots on the trail...
really though,
I promise it was not as bad as this looks!

The trek back was murderous
with nightfall settling in,
three kids that needed to be carried,
and a sled that was out of comission
thanks to a hole!

Luckily, we had someone
-or I should say, three someones-
waiting to welcome us home!

Note:
As cute as they appear to be,
they are not!

Owen "relieved" himself in
the night off of the porch
and in the morning
we found a frenzied scrabble in the snow!

Yuck!

Goooood morning!

Time to explore
General German's Tree Trail
and a hike around Hume Lake!

It appears that only the disabled are allowed...

a perfect fit for Samuel!  :)

Bear tracks!

We followed them for awhile and then realized that
probably wasn't a very good idea...

Hmmm...more bear...only this time cub tracks too....

Not good!

I pushed everyone hard.

We needed to get out of here!

For some,
the hiked proved to be too rigorous...

Others just needed
some refreshment...

Salami, Cheese, and Ritz Crackers on Sourdough?

Anyone?  Anyone?

Gabriel followed suit with his own concoction:
A Brownie Bar and Salami on Sourdough-
and then rejected his own creation...

Note the dome at the bottom of the photo...

Big Baldy, indeed...

{he he}

Midnight snowmen and sledding gave way
to giant burgers...

...which of course is the perfect segway into
a perfect breakfast of powdered donuts!

Our trip was fast coming to an end,
but before we left,
the kids begged for some final runs
down the mountain!

We had the time of our life,
and where previously I was a total baby about snow
-too cold and wet!-
I actually liked it!
